Typeface credits and licences

Some of the lettering made for Floss Field’s needlepoint and hand embroidery comes from open typefaces: fonts whose makers publish them under a licence that lets anyone use them, change them and share what they made. This page credits those makers, says what we made from each typeface and what we call it, and prints each licence in full.
A typeface is listed here before anything made from it appears on the site, so what is named below may not be published yet.
This page was written without a lawyer. It is our plain account of what we used and how we used it. It is not legal advice, and where it and a licence differ, the licence, printed below, is what counts.
What we made
The fonts themselves are not on this site. What we publish comes from their letter shapes. For needlepoint, each letter is reduced from the font file to one square for each stitch, which gives a charted alphabet. For hand embroidery, each letter’s outline is taken from the font file, as a line to trace onto fabric.
We treat every one of these as a modified version of the typeface it was made from. Each keeps that typeface’s copyright notice and licence, which are on this page. Each goes by a name of our own. No name of ours uses a name that a typeface’s makers reserved, and none uses even a single whole word of a name reserved for the typeface it was made from. That is the stricter of two ways to read the licence, and it is the one given by SIL International, which wrote the Open Font License, in its questions and answers about it.
A name of ours belongs to one craft. Art Deco, Old English and Western are each the name of one alphabet in needlepoint and of letters made from another typeface in hand embroidery, so read a name in its own craft’s table.

Cross stitch
The cross stitch letterings (Block, Serif, Bold, Narrow and Typewriter) do not come from any typeface, so they have no typeface to credit. Needlepoint’s Typewriter, made from Courier Prime, is a different alphabet from the cross stitch Typewriter.

The charted alphabet made from Chewy is not the font as its makers published it. We changed it: each letter is reduced from the font file to one square for each stitch.
