Learn needlepoint, step by step

  1. How to needlepoint

    Needlepoint is one stitch, repeated.

  2. Choose a canvas and a mesh size

Mesh is the number of holes in an inch of canvas.

  3. Choose a thread for your mesh

The right thread covers the canvas and still slips through the holes.

  4. Choose a needle

Needlepoint uses tapestry needles: blunt, so they slip between canvas threads instead of splitting them, with a large eye for thick thread.

  5. Basketweave or continental

All three tent stitches look the same from the front.

  6. Start and end a thread

    Needlepoint is finished without knots.

Do I need a painted canvas to start?

No. Most needlepoint designs come painted or printed on the canvas, so you stitch each color where you see it. You can also work from a chart, counting squares onto blank canvas.
