Paper for the PDF
Groups of three double crochets with one chain between them, each group worked into the chain space below: the fabric of a granny square's sides, worked back and forth in rows.
Gauge
13 stitches and 7½ rows to 4 in (10 cm) in granny groups and chains.
How to measure it
Along a row, count every stitch and every chain between stitches as one.
To count your gauge in the middle of the test piece: three repeats of the bracketed group side by side (12 foundation chains' worth) are about 3.7 in (9.4 cm) wide, and 8 rows are about 4.3 in (10.8 cm) tall.
The pattern also stops you to measure after row 6.
Work a test square first (11 rows)
Work the test piece first. This piece is wide, and starting again after the first place to stop means working its first rows a second time.
A test piece to measure and pull out. It is not the start of the pattern.
Gauge is counted over 4 in (10 cm), so make the swatch bigger than that: about 6 in (15 cm) each way, and count in the middle of it.
- Swatch foundationCh 23.
- Swatch row 1 (RS)3 dc in 5th ch from hook (skipped chs count as dc), repeat: ch 1, sk next 3 chs, 3 dc in next ch 4 times, sk next ch, dc in next ch(17 dc, 4 ch-1 sps)
- Swatch row 2Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn; dc in same st, ch 1, repeat: 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1 4 times, sk next 3 sts, 2 dc in top of turning ch(16 dc, 5 ch-1 sps)
- Swatch row 3Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn; repeat: 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1 4 times, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, sk next st, dc in top of turning ch(17 dc, 4 ch-1 sps)
- Swatch rows 4 to 11Repeat swatch rows 2 and 3 in turn: every even-numbered row is worked as swatch row 2, every odd-numbered row as swatch row 3.
For another width: how many chains to add
For another width, add or take away 4 chains at a time: each 4 chains adds one more repeat of each bracketed group. Measure your own gauge first.
The starting chain calculator opens on this pattern's multiple and gauge: type the width you want.
Before you start
- The ch 3 at the start of a row counts as a dc. The last stitch of the next row is worked into the top of it.
- Row 1 is the right side.
- A stitch worked into a chain space passes over any stitches that lie before the space; they are left unworked.
- Stitches in parentheses, or several of one stitch, are all worked into the one place named after them.
- The number of rows is our estimate: yours may differ, and the length does not change the stitch count.
- Leave a tail of about 6 in (15 cm) when you begin, and weave it in at the end with the others.
Instructions
- “[ ]” is a repeat.
- The count at the end is what the row leaves.
- Tick a row when it is done. Your place is kept in this browser.
How to read these rows
Square brackets “[ ]” hold a repeat: work what is inside as many times as it says. In UK terms dc is treble.
- FoundationCh 179.
- Row 1RS3 dc in 5th ch from hook (skipped chs count as dc), repeat: ch 1, sk next 3 chs, 3 dc in next ch 43 times, sk next ch, dc in next chleaves (134 dc, 43 ch-1 sps)
- Row 2Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn; dc in same st, ch 1, repeat: 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1 43 times, sk next 3 sts, 2 dc in top of turning chleaves (133 dc, 44 ch-1 sps)
- Row 3Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn; repeat: 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1 43 times, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, sk next st, dc in top of turning chleaves (134 dc, 43 ch-1 sps)
- Stop and measure when you have worked row 6.Width, across the middle of the rows and not along the chain edge: about 54½ in (138 cm). If it is wider, start again with a smaller hook; if it is narrower, with a larger one. If only the chain edge is tight, make the chain with a larger hook.
- Rows 4 to 123Repeat rows 2 and 3 in turn: every even-numbered row is worked as row 2, every odd-numbered row as row 3.Repeat until the piece measures about 65½ in (166 cm), ending with a row worked as row 3: at our gauge that is row 123. Go by the tape measure, not the count.Next: row 4 of 123, worked as row 2
- EndFasten off, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail.
Finishing
- Weave in the ends.
- This pattern has no border, and every size given here is without one.
In all: 123 rows; 16,421 stitches; 2 ends to weave in.
The same stitch as other things
Each is worked in the same stitch pattern, granny groups and chains, with its own counts and yarn amount.
