Go to the instructions

Two single crochets in every other stitch: small leaning pairs that give a close, grainy fabric, a little looser than plain single crochet.

The whole throw: 54¼ × 66 in (138 × 168 cm)

Gauge

13 stitches and 15 rows to 4 in (10 cm) in grit stitch.

How to measure it

To count your gauge in the middle of the test piece: 7 repeats of the bracketed group side by side (14 foundation chains' worth) are about 4.3 in (10.9 cm) wide, and 15 rows are about 4 in (10 cm) tall.

How to measure your gauge

The pattern also stops you to measure after row 12.

Work a test square first (23 rows)

Work the test piece first. This piece is wide, and starting again after the first place to stop means working its first rows a second time.

A test piece to measure and pull out. It is not the start of the pattern.

Gauge is counted over 4 in (10 cm), so make the swatch bigger than that: about 6 in (15 cm) each way, and count in the middle of it.

  1. Swatch foundationCh 21.
  2. Swatch row 1 (RS)Sc in 2nd ch from hook, repeat: sk next ch, 2 sc in next ch 9 times, sc in next ch(20 sc)
  3. Swatch rows 2 to 23Ch 1, turn; sc in first st, repeat: sk next st, 2 sc in next st 9 times, sc in last st(20 sc)
For another width: how many chains to add

For another width, add or take away 2 chains at a time: each 2 chains adds one more repeat of each bracketed group. Measure your own gauge first.

The starting chain calculator opens on this pattern's multiple and gauge: type the width you want.

Before you start

  • The ch 1 at the start of a row does not count as a stitch.
  • Row 1 is the right side.
  • Stitches in parentheses, or several of one stitch, are all worked into the one place named after them.
  • The number of rows is our estimate: yours may differ, and the length does not change the stitch count.
  • Leave a tail of about 6 in (15 cm) when you begin, and weave it in at the end with the others.

Instructions

US termsUK terms

  • “[ ]” is a repeat.
  • The count at the end is what the row leaves.
  • Tick a row when it is done. Your place is kept in this browser.
How to read these rows

Square brackets “[ ]” hold a repeat: work what is inside as many times as it says. In UK terms sc is double crochet.

  1. FoundationCh 177.
  2. Row 1RSSc in 2nd ch from hook, repeat: sk next ch, 2 sc in next ch 87 times, sc in next chleaves (176 sc)
  3. Stop and measure when you have worked row 12.Width, across the middle of the rows and not along the chain edge: about 54¼ in (138 cm). If it is wider, start again with a smaller hook; if it is narrower, with a larger one. If only the chain edge is tight, make the chain with a larger hook.
  4. Rows 2 to 248Ch 1, turn; sc in first st, repeat: sk next st, 2 sc in next st 87 times, sc in last stleaves (176 sc)Repeat until the piece measures about 66 in (168 cm): at our gauge that is row 248. Go by the tape measure, not the count.
  5. EndFasten off, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail.

Finishing

  • Weave in the ends.
  • This pattern has no border, and every size given here is without one.

In all: 248 rows; 43,648 stitches; 2 ends to weave in.

The same stitch as other things

Each is worked in the same stitch pattern, grit stitch, with its own counts and yarn amount.
