Go to the instructions

Single crochets set into the chain spaces of the row below, so the stitches sit in a staggered, woven-looking grid. Flat, supple and the same on both sides.

The whole throw: 54¼ × 66 in (138 × 168 cm)

Gauge

13 stitches and 17½ rows to 4 in (10 cm) in moss stitch.

How to measure it

Along a row, count every stitch and every chain between stitches as one.

To count your gauge in the middle of the test piece: 7 repeats of the bracketed group side by side (14 foundation chains' worth) are about 4.3 in (10.9 cm) wide, and 18 rows are about 4.1 in (10.5 cm) tall.

How to measure your gauge

The pattern also stops you to measure after row 14.

Work a test square first (26 rows)

Work the test piece first. This piece is wide, and starting again after the first place to stop means working its first rows a second time.

A test piece to measure and pull out. It is not the start of the pattern.

Gauge is counted over 4 in (10 cm), so make the swatch bigger than that: about 6 in (15 cm) each way, and count in the middle of it.

  1. Swatch foundationCh 22.
  2. Swatch row 1 (RS)Sc in 4th ch from hook, repeat: ch 1, sk next ch, sc in next ch 9 times(10 sc, 9 ch-1 sps, 1 turning ch sp)
  3. Swatch rows 2 to 26Ch 2, turn; repeat: sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1 9 times, sc in turning ch sp(10 sc, 9 ch-1 sps, 1 turning ch sp)
For another width: how many chains to add

For another width, add or take away 2 chains at a time: each 2 chains adds one more repeat of each bracketed group. Measure your own gauge first.

The starting chain calculator opens on this pattern's multiple and gauge: type the width you want.

Before you start

  • The three chains skipped at the start of row 1 make the first turning ch sp, which row 2 works into.
  • The ch 2 at the start of a row does not count as a stitch. It makes the turning ch sp, and the last stitch of the next row is worked into that space.
  • Row 1 is the right side.
  • A stitch worked into a chain space passes over any stitches that lie before the space; they are left unworked.
  • The number of rows is our estimate: yours may differ, and the length does not change the stitch count.
  • Leave a tail of about 6 in (15 cm) when you begin, and weave it in at the end with the others.

Instructions

US termsUK terms

  • “[ ]” is a repeat.
  • The count at the end is what the row leaves.
  • Tick a row when it is done. Your place is kept in this browser.
How to read these rows

Square brackets “[ ]” hold a repeat: work what is inside as many times as it says. In UK terms sc is double crochet.

  1. FoundationCh 178.
  2. Row 1RSSc in 4th ch from hook, repeat: ch 1, sk next ch, sc in next ch 87 timesleaves (88 sc, 87 ch-1 sps, 1 turning ch sp)
  3. Stop and measure when you have worked row 14.Width, across the middle of the rows and not along the chain edge: about 54¼ in (138 cm). If it is wider, start again with a smaller hook; if it is narrower, with a larger one. If only the chain edge is tight, make the chain with a larger hook.
  4. Rows 2 to 289Ch 2, turn; repeat: sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1 87 times, sc in turning ch spleaves (88 sc, 87 ch-1 sps, 1 turning ch sp)Repeat until the piece measures about 66 in (168 cm): at our gauge that is row 289. Go by the tape measure, not the count.
  5. EndFasten off, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail.

Finishing

  • Weave in the ends.
  • This pattern has no border, and every size given here is without one.

In all: 289 rows; 25,432 stitches; 2 ends to weave in.
