Granule stitch
Granule stitch is single crochet (UK double crochet) dotted with small knots. A knot is a picot single crochet: put the hook in and pull up a loop, work 3 chains in that loop, then close the stitch as usual. Knots and plain single crochets take turns along a row, a plain row follows, and the next row of knots is set one stitch to the side. Four rows repeat.
How to work it
Pull up a loop, then chain 3 in it
Put the hook into the stitch and pull up a loop, as for a single crochet. Two loops are on the hook. Now yarn over and pull through the first loop only, three times. That makes 3 chains in the loop, and two loops are still on the hook.
Set the next knots between the last ones
Begin the next row of knots with two plain single crochets, so that each knot stands between two knots of the row of knots before. Work a plain row after it, and begin again.
The stitch pattern, row by row
- Multiple
- Chain a multiple of 2 (8 or more).
- Starting chain
- The rows here are written for a chain of 20, which is 10 times the multiple of 2.
- The ch 1 at the start of a row does not count as a stitch.
- Row 1 is the right side.
- The picot single crochets are made on wrong-side rows and their small knots push out to the right side.
- Foundation. Ch 20.
- Row 1 (RS). Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (19 sc).
- Row 2. Ch 1, turn; sc in next st, [psc in next st, sc in next st] 9 times (10 sc, 9 psc).
- Row 3. Ch 1, turn; sc in each st across (19 sc).
- Row 4. Ch 1, turn; sc in next 2 sts, [psc in next st, sc in next st] 8 times, sc in next st (11 sc, 8 psc).
- Row 5. Ch 1, turn; sc in each st across (19 sc).
Repeat rows 2 to 5 for the pattern.

At a glance
- Used for
- scarves; a firm fabric with small knots on one side
- Multiple
- The chain is a multiple of 2 (8 or more).
- Row repeat
- Rows 2 to 5.
- One knot
- A picot single crochet: a loop pulled up, 3 chains worked in it, then closed like a single crochet
- Loops on the hook
- 2 after the loop is pulled up, and still 2 after the 3 chains
- Knots are made on
- Every second row, each row of knots one stitch to the side of the last
A picot single crochet counts as one stitch, and the plain row works into it like any other, so the count never changes. The knots are the only texture: the fabric between them is plain single crochet.
In the rows here the knots are made with the wrong side facing and pushed away from you, so that they show on the right side. Other published rows make them with the right side facing and push them forward. Either way all the knots end up on one side.
When it goes wrong
- My knots are on both sides.
- Push each knot to the same side as you close the stitch: in the rows here, the side away from you.
- The knots line up in columns.
- Every second row of knots begins with two plain single crochets, not one. That moves its knots one stitch along.
- I end the picot with too many loops.
- Each of the 3 chains is pulled through the first loop on the hook only. There are two loops on the hook all the way through, until the last yarn over closes both.
Left-handed
The pictures show the hook held in the right hand. For the left hand, read each picture as its mirror image.
Variations
- Picot stitch. The picot on its own, as a trim: chains closed into a small loop.

- What is a picot single crochet?
- A single crochet with 3 chains worked in it: hook in, pull up a loop, pull the yarn through the first loop three times, then through both loops.
- Which side is the right side?
- The side the knots are on.
