Puff V-stitch

A puff V-stitch is two puff stitches worked into one place with one chain between them, so that they lean apart like the sides of a V. On every row after the first, each pair goes into the chain space of the pair below it. A double crochet (UK treble) stands at each end of the row, and one row repeats.

How to work it

  1. A puff, a chain and a puff in one place

Two groups stand on the foundation chain, with two chains skipped between the places they rise from. Each group is two puff stitches that lean apart from one chain, with one chain between their tops. The newer group is in the accent color. One loop is on the hook.

Work a puff stitch, chain 1, and work a second puff stitch into the same place as the first. That is one group. On the first row, skip two chains of the foundation chain and work the next group into the chain after them.

  2. Into the chain space of the group below

A new row of groups on a row of groups. Each new group rises from the chain space between the two puffs of the group below it. The newest group is in the accent color, and a ring marks the next chain space, where the next group goes. One loop is on the hook.

On every later row, work each group into the chain space between the two puffs of a group below: a puff, chain 1, a puff. The hook goes into the gap under the chain. Nothing is worked into the tops of the puffs.

  3. A double crochet at each end

Begin each row with 3 chains, which count as a double crochet. End it with a double crochet in the top of the 3 chains that began the row below.

Starting chain
The rows here are written for a chain of 22, which is 7 times the multiple of 3, plus 1.

  • The ch 3 at the start of a row counts as a dc. The last stitch of the next row is worked into the top of it.
  • Row 1 is the right side.
  • A stitch worked into a chain space passes over any stitches that lie before the space; they are left unworked.
  • Stitches in parentheses, or several of one stitch, are all worked into the one place named after them.

  3. Row 2. Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn; [(puff, ch 1, puff) in next ch-1 sp] 6 times, sk next st, dc in top of turning ch (2 dc, 12 puffs, 6 ch-1 sps).

Repeat row 2 for the pattern.

The pair is a V-stitch with a puff in place of each of its two double crochets. The puffs themselves are made as on the Puff stitch page, as far as the pull through all the loops. The chain that locks each puff there is not worked in the rows here, where the only chain is the one between the pair. This page teaches only the pair and its rows.

Published rows differ in three things. A puff is made with three, four or five loops pulled up, which gives 7, 9 or 11 loops on the hook. One, two or three chains stand between the two puffs. And some rows close every puff with a chain of its own, where the rows here use only the chain between the pair. Follow one set of rows from start to finish.

Tips

  • Pull every loop of every puff up to the same height, about that of a double crochet.

When it goes wrong

My puffs are different sizes.
Count the loops on the hook before you pull through: nine for each puff in these rows. Draw each loop up as tall as the first one.
I cannot tell where the next group goes.
Look for the single chain between the two puffs of the group below and put the hook into the gap under it.
My rows get shorter.
The last stitch of a row is the double crochet in the top of the 3 chains that began the row below. Count the groups in each row: the number does not change.

Left-handed

The pictures show the hook held in the right hand. For the left hand, read each picture as its mirror image.

Variations

  • More or fewer loops in a puff. Pull up three loops for a smaller puff or five for a larger one, the same number for every puff of the piece.
  • More chains between the puffs. Two or three chains between the two puffs, in place of one, open the V wider.

Questions

What is a puff V-stitch?
Two puff stitches in one place with a chain between them. It is built like a V-stitch, which is two double crochets in one place with a chain between them.
Is the V-puff stitch the same thing?
Tutorials put the words in more than one order: puff V-stitch, V-puff stitch and V-stitch puffs. Each is two puffs and a chain in one place; the rows around the pair differ from one tutorial to the next.
What is the multiple for puff V-stitch?
For the rows here, a chain that is a multiple of 3 plus 1. Other published rows space the groups differently, so use the multiple given with the rows you follow.
What is it used for?
