Go to the instructions

A mesh with every other square filled: solid blocks of double crochet and open spaces alternate like a chessboard.

The whole throw: 54¾ × 65½ in (139 × 166 cm)

Gauge

13 stitches and 7½ rows to 4 in (10 cm) in checkerboard mesh.

How to measure it

Along a row, count every stitch and every chain between stitches as one.

To count your gauge in the middle of the test piece: two repeats of the bracketed group side by side (12 foundation chains' worth) are about 3.7 in (9.4 cm) wide, and 8 rows are about 4.3 in (10.8 cm) tall.

How to measure your gauge

The pattern also stops you to measure after row 6.

Work a test square first (11 rows)

Work the test piece first. This piece is wide, and starting again after the first place to stop means working its first rows a second time.

A test piece to measure and pull out. It is not the start of the pattern.

Gauge is counted over 4 in (10 cm), so make the swatch bigger than that: about 6 in (15 cm) each way, and count in the middle of it.

  1. Swatch foundationCh 24.
  2. Swatch row 1 (RS)Dc in 4th ch from hook (skipped chs count as dc), dc in next 2 chs, repeat: ch 2, sk next 2 chs, dc in next 4 chs 3 times(16 dc, 3 ch-2 sps)
  3. Swatch row 2Ch 5 (counts as dc and ch-2 sp), turn; sk next 2 sts, dc in next st, repeat: 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in next st, ch 2, sk next 2 sts, dc in next st 2 times, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in next st, ch 2, sk next 2 sts, dc in top of turning ch(14 dc, 4 ch-2 sps)
  4. Swatch row 3Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn; repeat: 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in next st, ch 2, sk next 2 sts, dc in next st 3 times, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in 3rd ch of turning ch(16 dc, 3 ch-2 sps)
  5. Swatch rows 4 to 11Repeat swatch rows 2 and 3 in turn: every even-numbered row is worked as swatch row 2, every odd-numbered row as swatch row 3.
For another width: how many chains to add

For another width, add or take away 6 chains at a time: each 6 chains adds one more repeat of each bracketed group. Measure your own gauge first.

The starting chain calculator opens on this pattern's multiple and gauge: type the width you want.

Before you start

  • The ch 5 at the start of a row counts as a dc and a ch-2 sp. The last stitch of the next row is worked into its 3rd ch.
  • The ch 3 at the start of a row counts as a dc. The last stitch of the next row is worked into the top of it.
  • Row 1 is the right side.
  • Stitches in parentheses, or several of one stitch, are all worked into the one place named after them.
  • The number of rows is our estimate: yours may differ, and the length does not change the stitch count.
  • Leave a tail of about 6 in (15 cm) when you begin, and weave it in at the end with the others.

Instructions

US termsUK terms

  • “[ ]” is a repeat.
  • The count at the end is what the row leaves.
  • Tick a row when it is done. Your place is kept in this browser.
How to read these rows

Square brackets “[ ]” hold a repeat: work what is inside as many times as it says. In UK terms dc is treble.

  1. FoundationCh 180.
  2. Row 1RSDc in 4th ch from hook (skipped chs count as dc), dc in next 2 chs, repeat: ch 2, sk next 2 chs, dc in next 4 chs 29 timesleaves (120 dc, 29 ch-2 sps)
  3. Row 2Ch 5 (counts as dc and ch-2 sp), turn; sk next 2 sts, dc in next st, repeat: 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in next st, ch 2, sk next 2 sts, dc in next st 28 times, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in next st, ch 2, sk next 2 sts, dc in top of turning chleaves (118 dc, 30 ch-2 sps)
  4. Row 3Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn; repeat: 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in next st, ch 2, sk next 2 sts, dc in next st 29 times, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in 3rd ch of turning chleaves (120 dc, 29 ch-2 sps)
  5. Stop and measure when you have worked row 6.Width, across the middle of the rows and not along the chain edge: about 54¾ in (139 cm). If it is wider, start again with a smaller hook; if it is narrower, with a larger one. If only the chain edge is tight, make the chain with a larger hook.
  6. Rows 4 to 123Repeat rows 2 and 3 in turn: every even-numbered row is worked as row 2, every odd-numbered row as row 3.Repeat until the piece measures about 65½ in (166 cm), ending with a row worked as row 3: at our gauge that is row 123. Go by the tape measure, not the count.
  7. EndFasten off, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail.

Finishing

  • Weave in the ends.
  • This pattern has no border, and every size given here is without one.

In all: 123 rows; 14,638 stitches; 2 ends to weave in.

The same stitch as a baby blanket

Each is worked in the same stitch pattern, checkerboard mesh, with its own counts and yarn amount.
