Go to the instructions

A firm, close fabric with almost no holes and a low, pebbled surface. Both sides look nearly alike.

The whole throw: 50¼ × 60 in (128 × 152 cm)

Gauge

13 stitches and 15 rows to 4 in (10 cm) in single crochet.

How to measure it

To count your gauge in the middle of the test piece: 13 stitches side by side are about 4 in (10 cm) wide, and 15 rows are about 4 in (10 cm) tall.

How to measure your gauge

The pattern also stops you to measure after row 12.

Work a test square first (23 rows)

Work the test piece first. This piece is wide, and starting again after the first place to stop means working its first rows a second time.

A test piece to measure and pull out. It is not the start of the pattern.

Gauge is counted over 4 in (10 cm), so make the swatch bigger than that: about 6 in (15 cm) each way, and count in the middle of it.

  1. Swatch foundationCh 21.
  2. Swatch row 1 (RS)Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across(20 sc)
  3. Swatch rows 2 to 23Ch 1, turn; sc in each st across(20 sc)
For another width: how many chains to add

For another width, chain more or fewer: each chain adds one stitch to every row. Measure your own stitches to 4 in (10 cm) first.

Before you start

  • The ch 1 at the start of a row does not count as a stitch.
  • Row 1 is the right side.
  • The number of rows is our estimate: yours may differ, and the length does not change the stitch count.
  • Leave a tail of about 6 in (15 cm) when you begin, and weave it in at the end with the others.

Instructions

  • The count at the end is what the row leaves.
  • Tick a row when it is done. Your place is kept in this browser.
How to read these rows

In UK terms sc is double crochet.

  1. FoundationCh 164.
  2. Row 1RSSc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch acrossleaves (163 sc)
  3. Stop and measure when you have worked row 12.Width, across the middle of the rows and not along the chain edge: about 50¼ in (128 cm). If it is wider, start again with a smaller hook; if it is narrower, with a larger one. If only the chain edge is tight, make the chain with a larger hook.
  4. Rows 2 to 225Ch 1, turn; sc in each st acrossleaves (163 sc)Repeat until the piece measures about 60 in (152 cm): at our gauge that is row 225. Go by the tape measure, not the count.
  5. EndFasten off, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail.

Finishing

  • Weave in the ends.
  • This pattern has no border, and every size given here is without one.

In all: 225 rows; 36,675 stitches; 2 ends to weave in.

The same stitch as other things

Each is worked in the same stitch pattern, single crochet, with its own counts and yarn amount.
