Paper for the PDF
Rows of double crochets crossed in pairs, each pair an X, with a row of single crochet between that squares the fabric up. Lightly open, with a woven look.
Gauge
13 stitches and 9½ rows to 4 in (10 cm) in crossed double crochet.
How to measure it
To count your gauge in the middle of the test piece: 7 repeats of the bracketed group side by side (14 foundation chains' worth) are about 4.3 in (10.9 cm) wide, and 10 rows are about 4.2 in (10.7 cm) tall.
The pattern also stops you to measure after row 8.
Work a test square first (15 rows)
Work the test piece first. This piece is wide, and starting again after the first place to stop means working its first rows a second time.
A test piece to measure and pull out. It is not the start of the pattern.
Gauge is counted over 4 in (10 cm), so make the swatch bigger than that: about 6 in (15 cm) each way, and count in the middle of it.
- Swatch foundationCh 21.
- Swatch row 1 (WS)Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across(20 sc)
- Swatch row 2Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn; repeat: sk next st, dc in next st, dc in skipped st 9 times, dc in last st(20 dc)
- Swatch row 3Ch 1, turn; sc in next 19 sts, sc in top of turning ch(20 sc)
- Swatch rows 4 to 15Repeat swatch rows 2 and 3 in turn: every even-numbered row is worked as swatch row 2, every odd-numbered row as swatch row 3.
For another width: how many chains to add
For another width, add or take away 2 chains at a time: each 2 chains adds one more repeat of each bracketed group, and 2 more stitches to a row that has no brackets. Measure your own gauge first.
The starting chain calculator opens on this pattern's multiple and gauge: type the width you want.
Before you start
- The ch 3 at the start of a row counts as a dc. The last stitch of the next row is worked into the top of it.
- The ch 1 at the start of a row does not count as a stitch.
- Row 1 is the wrong side.
- The number of rows is our estimate: yours may differ, and the length does not change the stitch count.
- Work the second double crochet of each pair into the stitch that was skipped, in front of the first, so the two cross.
- Leave a tail of about 6 in (15 cm) when you begin, and weave it in at the end with the others.
Instructions
- “[ ]” is a repeat.
- The count at the end is what the row leaves.
- Tick a row when it is done. Your place is kept in this browser.
How to read these rows
Square brackets “[ ]” hold a repeat: work what is inside as many times as it says. In UK terms sc is double crochet and dc is treble.
- FoundationCh 177.
- Row 1WSSc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch acrossleaves (176 sc)
- Row 2Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn; repeat: sk next st, dc in next st, dc in skipped st 87 times, dc in last stleaves (176 dc)
- Row 3Ch 1, turn; sc in next 175 sts, sc in top of turning chleaves (176 sc)
- Stop and measure when you have worked row 8.Width, across the middle of the rows and not along the chain edge: about 54¼ in (138 cm). If it is wider, start again with a smaller hook; if it is narrower, with a larger one. If only the chain edge is tight, make the chain with a larger hook.
- Rows 4 to 157Repeat rows 2 and 3 in turn: every even-numbered row is worked as row 2, every odd-numbered row as row 3.Repeat until the piece measures about 66 in (168 cm), ending with a row worked as row 3: at our gauge that is row 157. Go by the tape measure, not the count.Next: row 4 of 157, worked as row 2
- EndFasten off, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail.
Finishing
- Weave in the ends.
- This pattern has no border, and every size given here is without one.
In all: 157 rows; 27,632 stitches; 2 ends to weave in.
The same stitch as other things
Each is worked in the same stitch pattern, crossed double crochet, with its own counts and yarn amount.
