Paper for the PDF
Round bobbles of five double crochets stand out from single crochet in a staggered pattern. Thick and one-sided.
Gauge
13 stitches and 14½ rows to 4 in (10 cm) in bobble stitch.
How to measure it
To count your gauge in the middle of the test piece: three repeats of the bracketed group side by side (12 foundation chains' worth) are about 3.7 in (9.4 cm) wide, and 16 rows are about 4.4 in (11.2 cm) tall.
The pattern also stops you to measure after row 11.
Work a test square first (21 rows)
Work the test piece first. This piece is wide, and starting again after the first place to stop means working its first rows a second time.
A test piece to measure and pull out. It is not the start of the pattern.
Gauge is counted over 4 in (10 cm), so make the swatch bigger than that: about 6 in (15 cm) each way, and count in the middle of it.
- Swatch foundationCh 22.
- Swatch row 1 (RS)Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across(21 sc)
- Swatch row 2Ch 1, turn; sc in next 2 sts, repeat: bo in next st, sc in next 3 sts 4 times, bo in next st, sc in next 2 sts(16 sc, 5 bo)
- Swatch row 3Ch 1, turn; sc in each st across(21 sc)
- Swatch row 4Ch 1, turn; sc in next 4 sts, repeat: bo in next st, sc in next 3 sts 4 times, sc in next st(17 sc, 4 bo)
- Swatch row 5Ch 1, turn; sc in each st across(21 sc)
- Swatch rows 6 to 21Repeat swatch rows 2 to 5 in order, over and over. The last row, swatch row 21, is worked as swatch row 5.
For another width: how many chains to add
For another width, add or take away 4 chains at a time: each 4 chains adds one more repeat of each bracketed group, and 4 more stitches to a row that has no brackets. Measure your own gauge first.
The starting chain calculator opens on this pattern's multiple and gauge: type the width you want.
Before you start
- The ch 1 at the start of a row does not count as a stitch.
- Row 1 is the right side.
- The number of rows is our estimate: yours may differ, and the length does not change the stitch count.
- The bobbles are made on wrong-side rows and push out to the right side; the single crochet after each one holds it there.
- Leave a tail of about 6 in (15 cm) when you begin, and weave it in at the end with the others.

- “[ ]” is a repeat.
- The count at the end is what the row leaves.
- Tick a row when it is done. Your place is kept in this browser.
How to read these rows
Square brackets “[ ]” hold a repeat: work what is inside as many times as it says. In UK terms sc is double crochet.
- FoundationCh 106.
- Row 1RSSc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch acrossleaves (105 sc)
- Row 2Ch 1, turn; sc in next 2 sts, repeat: bo in next st, sc in next 3 sts 25 times, bo in next st, sc in next 2 stsleaves (79 sc, 26 bo)
- Row 3Ch 1, turn; sc in each st acrossleaves (105 sc)
- Row 4Ch 1, turn; sc in next 4 sts, repeat: bo in next st, sc in next 3 sts 25 times, sc in next stleaves (80 sc, 25 bo)
- Row 5Ch 1, turn; sc in each st acrossleaves (105 sc)
- Stop and measure when you have worked row 11.Width, across the middle of the rows and not along the chain edge: about 32¼ in (82 cm). If it is wider, start again with a smaller hook; if it is narrower, with a larger one. If only the chain edge is tight, make the chain with a larger hook.
- Rows 6 to 145Repeat rows 2 to 5 in order, over and over. The last row, row 145, is worked as row 5.Repeat until the piece measures about 40 in (102 cm), ending with a row worked as row 5: at our gauge that is row 145. Go by the tape measure, not the count.Next: row 6 of 145, worked as row 2
- EndFasten off, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail.
Finishing
- Weave in the ends.
- This pattern has no border, and every size given here is without one.
In all: 145 rows; 2 ends to weave in.
The same stitch as a throw
Each is worked in the same stitch pattern, bobble stitch, with its own counts and yarn amount.
