- These are common sizes, taken from the charts we read, and the charts differ. Where they differ, the row runs from the smallest to the largest size they give.
- Width comes first, then length. Centimeters are worked out from the inches and rounded to a whole centimeter.
How it works
- The charts do not agree on one size for a baby blanket, and a blanket a little larger or smaller than the chart is not wrong. Choose the row nearest to what the blanket is for.
- A pattern often comes out a little off these sizes, because a stitch pattern is made in whole repeats. To make a blanket wider or narrower, add or take away whole repeats, so that the starting chain is still the pattern's multiple.
- Your own gauge changes the size. Looser stitches make a larger blanket from the same pattern, so make a swatch and measure it before you start.
Worked examples
- How big should a crochet baby blanket be?
- The charts we read run from 24 by 36 inches (61 by 91 cm) to 42 by 52 inches (107 by 132 cm). Two of them give 42 by 52 inches (107 by 132 cm).
- What size is a receiving blanket?
- A square of 24 to 40 inches (61 to 102 cm), depending on the chart.
- What size is a stroller blanket?
- About 30 by 35 to 36 inches (76 by 89 to 91 cm).
- What size is a lovey?
- About 10 to 12 inches (25 to 30 cm) square.
Questions
- What is the difference between a receiving blanket and a baby blanket?
- A receiving blanket is square. A baby blanket is usually a rectangle, a little longer than it is wide.
- How many chains do I start with for a baby blanket?
- It depends on your gauge and on the stitch. Make a swatch in the stitch you will use, count the stitches in it, and work out the chain for the width you want. The starting chain calculator does the sum.
- How much yarn does a baby blanket take?
- It depends on the size of the blanket, the thickness of the yarn and the stitch, so no one figure fits. The yarn calculator works out an estimate from a swatch of your own.
