Pairs of double crochets crossed over each other in an X in every row, with no plain row between. More open than the crossed rows with single crochet between them.

The whole scarf: 6¾ × 60 in (17 × 152 cm)

Gauge

13 stitches and 7 rows to 4 in (10 cm) in crossed double crochet in every row.

How to measure it

To count your gauge in the middle of the test piece: 7 repeats of the bracketed group side by side (14 foundation chains' worth) are about 4.3 in (10.9 cm) wide, and 7 rows are about 4 in (10 cm) tall.

How to measure your gauge

The pattern also stops you to measure after row 6.

Work a test square first (11 rows)

This piece is small enough to be its own test piece: you may skip the test piece, begin, and measure the width at the first place to stop.

If you do make a swatch, it is a test piece to measure and pull out, not the start of the pattern.

Gauge is counted over 4 in (10 cm), so make the swatch bigger than that: about 6 in (15 cm) each way, and count in the middle of it.

  1. Swatch foundationCh 22.
  2. Swatch row 1 (RS)Dc in 4th ch from hook (skipped chs count as dc) and in each ch across(20 dc)
  3. Swatch rows 2 to 11Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn; repeat: sk next st, dc in next st, dc in skipped st 9 times, dc in top of turning ch(20 dc)
For another width: how many chains to add

For another width, add or take away 2 chains at a time: each 2 chains adds one more repeat of each bracketed group, and 2 more stitches to a row that has no brackets. Measure your own gauge first.

The starting chain calculator opens on this pattern's multiple and gauge: type the width you want.

Before you start

  • The ch 3 at the start of a row counts as a dc. The last stitch of the next row is worked into the top of it.
  • Row 1 is the right side.
  • The number of rows is our estimate: yours may differ, and the length does not change the stitch count.
  • Work the second double crochet of each pair in front of the first, into the stitch that was skipped, so the two cross.
  • Leave a tail of about 6 in (15 cm) when you begin, and weave it in at the end with the others.

  • “[ ]” is a repeat.
  • The count at the end is what the row leaves.
  • Tick a row when it is done. Your place is kept in this browser.
How to read these rows

Square brackets “[ ]” hold a repeat: work what is inside as many times as it says. In UK terms dc is treble.

  1. FoundationCh 24.
  2. Row 1RSDc in 4th ch from hook (skipped chs count as dc) and in each ch acrossleaves (22 dc)
  3. Stop and measure when you have worked row 6.Width, across the middle of the rows and not along the chain edge: about 6¾ in (17 cm). If it is wider, start again with a smaller hook; if it is narrower, with a larger one. If only the chain edge is tight, make the chain with a larger hook.
  4. Rows 2 to 105Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn; repeat: sk next st, dc in next st, dc in skipped st 10 times, dc in top of turning chleaves (22 dc)Repeat until the piece measures about 60 in (152 cm): at our gauge that is row 105. Go by the tape measure, not the count.
  5. EndFasten off, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail.

Finishing

  • Weave in the ends.
  • This pattern has no border, and every size given here is without one.

In all: 105 rows; 2,310 stitches; 2 ends to weave in.

The same stitch as other things

Each is worked in the same stitch pattern, crossed double crochet in every row, with its own counts and yarn amount.
