Paper for the PDF
Working under the bar below the top loops pushes those loops forward, so every row leaves a line of sideways Vs like a knitted ridge. In turned rows the ridges fall on both sides, which gives a ribbed look.
Gauge
13 stitches and 11 rows to 4 in (10 cm) in half double crochet in the third loop.
How to measure it
To count your gauge in the middle of the test piece: 13 stitches side by side are about 4 in (10 cm) wide, and 11 rows are about 4 in (10 cm) tall.
The pattern also stops you to measure after row 9.
Work a test square first (17 rows)
This piece is small enough to be its own test piece: you may skip the test piece, begin, and measure the width at the first place to stop.
If you do make a swatch, it is a test piece to measure and pull out, not the start of the pattern.
Gauge is counted over 4 in (10 cm), so make the swatch bigger than that: about 6 in (15 cm) each way, and count in the middle of it.
- Swatch foundationCh 22.
- Swatch row 1 (RS)Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across(20 hdc)
- Swatch rows 2 to 17Ch 2, turn; hdc in third loop of each st across(20 hdc)
For another width: how many chains to add
For another width, chain more or fewer: each chain adds one stitch to every row. Measure your own stitches to 4 in (10 cm) first.
Before you start
- The ch 2 at the start of a row does not count as a stitch.
- Row 1 is the right side.
- The number of rows is our estimate: yours may differ, and the length does not change the stitch count.
- The third loop of a half double crochet is the bar just below its two top loops. After you turn, it lies on the side facing you.
- Leave a tail of about 6 in (15 cm) when you begin, and weave it in at the end with the others.

- The count at the end is what the row leaves.
- Tick a row when it is done. Your place is kept in this browser.
How to read these rows
In UK terms hdc is half treble.

- Row 1RSHdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch acrossleaves (23 hdc)
- Stop and measure when you have worked row 9.Width, across the middle of the rows and not along the chain edge: about 7 in (18 cm). If it is wider, start again with a smaller hook; if it is narrower, with a larger one. If only the chain edge is tight, make the chain with a larger hook.
- Rows 2 to 165Ch 2, turn; hdc in third loop of each st acrossleaves (23 hdc)Repeat until the piece measures about 60 in (152 cm): at our gauge that is row 165. Go by the tape measure, not the count.Next: row 2 of 165
- EndFasten off, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail.
Finishing
- Weave in the ends.
- This pattern has no border, and every size given here is without one.
