Paper for the PDF
Plain single crochet with a line of small eyelets every third row.
Gauge
13 stitches and 15½ rows to 4 in (10 cm) in single crochet eyelet rows.
How to measure it
Along a row, count every stitch and every chain between stitches as one.
To count your gauge in the middle of the test piece: 7 repeats of the bracketed group side by side (14 foundation chains' worth) are about 4.3 in (10.9 cm) wide, and 15 rows are about 3.9 in (9.8 cm) tall.
The pattern also stops you to measure after row 12.
Work a test square first (22 rows)
Work the test piece first. This piece is wide, and starting again after the first place to stop means working its first rows a second time.
A test piece to measure and pull out. It is not the start of the pattern.
Gauge is counted over 4 in (10 cm), so make the swatch bigger than that: about 6 in (15 cm) each way, and count in the middle of it.
- Swatch foundationCh 20.
- Swatch row 1 (RS)Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across(19 sc)
- Swatch row 2Ch 1, turn; sc in each st across(19 sc)
- Swatch row 3Ch 1, turn; sc in next st, repeat: ch 1, sk next st, sc in next st 9 times(10 sc, 9 ch-1 sps)
- Swatch row 4Ch 1, turn; sc in next st, repeat: sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next st 9 times(19 sc)
- Swatch rows 5 to 22Repeat swatch rows 2 to 4 in order, over and over. The last row, swatch row 22, is worked as swatch row 4.
For another width: how many chains to add
For another width, add or take away 2 chains at a time: each 2 chains adds one more repeat of each bracketed group, and 2 more stitches to a row that has no brackets. Measure your own gauge first.
The starting chain calculator opens on this pattern's multiple and gauge: type the width you want.
Before you start
- The ch 1 at the start of a row does not count as a stitch.
- Row 1 is the right side.
- The number of rows is our estimate: yours may differ, and the length does not change the stitch count.
- Leave a tail of about 6 in (15 cm) when you begin, and weave it in at the end with the others.
Instructions

- “[ ]” is a repeat.
- The count at the end is what the row leaves.
- Tick a row when it is done. Your place is kept in this browser.
How to read these rows
Square brackets “[ ]” hold a repeat: work what is inside as many times as it says. In UK terms sc is double crochet.
- FoundationCh 106.
- Row 1RSSc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch acrossleaves (105 sc)
- Row 2Ch 1, turn; sc in each st acrossleaves (105 sc)
- Row 3Ch 1, turn; sc in next st, repeat: ch 1, sk next st, sc in next st 52 timesleaves (53 sc, 52 ch-1 sps)
- Row 4Ch 1, turn; sc in next st, repeat: sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next st 52 timesleaves (105 sc)
- Stop and measure when you have worked row 12.Width, across the middle of the rows and not along the chain edge: about 32¼ in (82 cm). If it is wider, start again with a smaller hook; if it is narrower, with a larger one. If only the chain edge is tight, make the chain with a larger hook.
- Rows 5 to 154Repeat rows 2 to 4 in order, over and over. The last row, row 154, is worked as row 4.Repeat until the piece measures about 39¾ in (101 cm), ending with a row worked as row 4: at our gauge that is row 154. Go by the tape measure, not the count.Next: row 5 of 154, worked as row 2
- EndFasten off, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail.
Finishing
- Weave in the ends.
- This pattern has no border, and every size given here is without one.
In all: 154 rows; 13,518 stitches; 2 ends to weave in.
The same stitch as a dishcloth
Each is worked in the same stitch pattern, single crochet eyelet rows, with its own counts and yarn amount.
