Paper for the PDF
A row of small chain loops, then a row that fills each loop with a shell of three double crochets; the loops of the next row sit on the middle stitch of each shell, like rows of small petals.
Gauge
13 stitches and 10 rows to 4 in (10 cm) in primrose stitch.
How to measure it
To count your gauge in the middle of the test piece: four repeats of the bracketed group side by side (12 foundation chains' worth) are about 3.7 in (9.4 cm) wide, and 10 rows are about 4 in (10 cm) tall.
The pattern also stops you to measure after row 8.
Work a test square first (15 rows)
This piece is small enough to be its own test piece: you may skip the test piece, begin, and measure the width at the first place to stop.
If you do make a swatch, it is a test piece to measure and pull out, not the start of the pattern.
Gauge is counted over 4 in (10 cm), so make the swatch bigger than that: about 6 in (15 cm) each way, and count in the middle of it.
- Swatch foundationCh 21.
- Swatch row 1 (RS)Sc in 2nd ch from hook, repeat: sk next ch, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch, sk next ch 6 times, sc in next ch(14 sc, 6 ch-2 sps)
- Swatch row 2Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn; repeat: 3 dc in next ch-2 sp 6 times, sk next st, dc in last st(20 dc)
- Swatch row 3Ch 1, turn; sc in first st, repeat: sk next st, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next st, sk next st 6 times, sc in top of turning ch(14 sc, 6 ch-2 sps)
- Swatch rows 4 to 15Repeat swatch rows 2 and 3 in turn: every even-numbered row is worked as swatch row 2, every odd-numbered row as swatch row 3.
For another width: how many chains to add
For another width, add or take away 3 chains at a time: each 3 chains adds one more repeat of each bracketed group. Measure your own gauge first.
The starting chain calculator opens on this pattern's multiple and gauge: type the width you want.
Before you start
- The ch 3 at the start of a row counts as a dc. The last stitch of the next row is worked into the top of it.
- The ch 1 at the start of a row does not count as a stitch.
- Row 1 is the right side.
- A stitch worked into a chain space passes over any stitches that lie before the space; they are left unworked.
- Stitches in parentheses, or several of one stitch, are all worked into the one place named after them.
- The number of rows is our estimate: yours may differ, and the length does not change the stitch count.
- Leave a tail of about 6 in (15 cm) when you begin, and weave it in at the end with the others.
Instructions
Size: Standard Change sizeUS termsUK terms
- “[ ]” is a repeat.
- “( )” goes into one place.
- The count at the end is what the row leaves.
- Tick a row when it is done. Your place is kept in this browser.
How to read these rows
Square brackets “[ ]” hold a repeat: work what is inside as many times as it says. Round brackets “( )” inside a line hold stitches that all go into one place. In UK terms sc is double crochet and dc is treble.
- FoundationCh 24.
- Row 1RSSc in 2nd ch from hook, repeat: sk next ch, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch, sk next ch 7 times, sc in next chleaves (16 sc, 7 ch-2 sps)
- Row 2Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn; repeat: 3 dc in next ch-2 sp 7 times, sk next st, dc in last stleaves (23 dc)
- Row 3Ch 1, turn; sc in first st, repeat: sk next st, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next st, sk next st 7 times, sc in top of turning chleaves (16 sc, 7 ch-2 sps)
- Stop and measure when you have worked row 8.Width, across the middle of the rows and not along the chain edge: about 7 in (18 cm). If it is wider, start again with a smaller hook; if it is narrower, with a larger one. If only the chain edge is tight, make the chain with a larger hook.
- Rows 4 to 151Repeat rows 2 and 3 in turn: every even-numbered row is worked as row 2, every odd-numbered row as row 3.Repeat until the piece measures about 60½ in (154 cm), ending with a row worked as row 3: at our gauge that is row 151. Go by the tape measure, not the count.Next: row 4 of 151, worked as row 2
- EndFasten off, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail.
Finishing
- Weave in the ends.
- This pattern has no border, and every size given here is without one.
In all: 151 rows; 2,941 stitches; 2 ends to weave in.
The same stitch as a baby blanket
Each is worked in the same stitch pattern, primrose stitch, with its own counts and yarn amount.
