Paper for the PDF
A net of double crochet posts with one chain between them, each post on top of the post below. Small square holes; light and stretchy.
Gauge
13 stitches and 7 rows to 4 in (10 cm) in double crochet mesh.
How to measure it
Along a row, count every stitch and every chain between stitches as one.
To count your gauge in the middle of the test piece: 7 repeats of the bracketed group side by side (14 foundation chains' worth) are about 4.3 in (10.9 cm) wide, and 7 rows are about 4 in (10 cm) tall.
The pattern also stops you to measure after row 6.
Work a test square first (11 rows)
This piece is small enough to be its own test piece: you may skip the test piece, begin, and measure the width at the first place to stop.
If you do make a swatch, it is a test piece to measure and pull out, not the start of the pattern.
Gauge is counted over 4 in (10 cm), so make the swatch bigger than that: about 6 in (15 cm) each way, and count in the middle of it.
- Swatch foundationCh 22.
- Swatch row 1 (RS)Dc in 6th ch from hook (skipped chs count as dc and ch-1 sp), repeat: ch 1, sk next ch, dc in next ch 8 times(10 dc, 9 ch-1 sps)
- Swatch rows 2 to 11Ch 4 (counts as dc and ch-1 sp), turn; repeat: sk next ch-1 sp, dc in next st, ch 1 8 times, sk next ch-1 sp, dc in 3rd ch of turning ch(10 dc, 9 ch-1 sps)
For another width: how many chains to add
For another width, add or take away 2 chains at a time: each 2 chains adds one more repeat of each bracketed group. Measure your own gauge first.
The starting chain calculator opens on this pattern's multiple and gauge: type the width you want.
Before you start
- The ch 4 at the start of a row counts as a dc and a ch-1 sp. The last stitch of the next row is worked into its 3rd ch.
- Row 1 is the right side.
- The number of rows is our estimate: yours may differ, and the length does not change the stitch count.
- In row 2 the turning ch is the chains skipped at the start of row 1: work the last dc of row 2 into the second-to-last chain of the foundation chain. From row 3 on it goes into the 3rd ch of the ch 4 below.
- Leave a tail of about 6 in (15 cm) when you begin, and weave it in at the end with the others.
Instructions
Size: Standard Change sizeUS termsUK terms
- “[ ]” is a repeat.
- The count at the end is what the row leaves.
- Tick a row when it is done. Your place is kept in this browser.
How to read these rows
Square brackets “[ ]” hold a repeat: work what is inside as many times as it says. In UK terms dc is treble.
- FoundationCh 26.
- Row 1RSDc in 6th ch from hook (skipped chs count as dc and ch-1 sp), repeat: ch 1, sk next ch, dc in next ch 10 timesleaves (12 dc, 11 ch-1 sps)
- Stop and measure when you have worked row 6.Width, across the middle of the rows and not along the chain edge: about 7 in (18 cm). If it is wider, start again with a smaller hook; if it is narrower, with a larger one. If only the chain edge is tight, make the chain with a larger hook.
- Rows 2 to 105Ch 4 (counts as dc and ch-1 sp), turn; repeat: sk next ch-1 sp, dc in next st, ch 1 10 times, sk next ch-1 sp, dc in 3rd ch of turning chleaves (12 dc, 11 ch-1 sps)Repeat until the piece measures about 60 in (152 cm): at our gauge that is row 105. Go by the tape measure, not the count.Next: row 2 of 105
- EndFasten off, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail.
Finishing
- Weave in the ends.
- This pattern has no border, and every size given here is without one.
In all: 105 rows; 1,260 stitches; 2 ends to weave in.
