Paper for the PDF
Single crochet bent into even zigzags: firm, closed, with pointed top and bottom edges.
Gauge
15½ stitches and 15 rows to 4 in (10 cm) in single crochet ripple.
How to measure it
To count your gauge in the middle of the test piece: one repeat of the bracketed group (11 foundation chains' worth) is about 2.8 in (7.2 cm) wide, and 15 rows are about 4 in (10 cm) tall.
The pattern also stops you to measure after row 12.
Work a test square first (23 rows)
Work the test piece first. This piece is wide, and starting again after the first place to stop means working its first rows a second time.
A test piece to measure and pull out. It is not the start of the pattern.
Gauge is counted over 4 in (10 cm), so make the swatch bigger than that: about 6 in (15 cm) each way, and count in the middle of it.
- Swatch foundationCh 35.
- Swatch row 1 (RS)2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, repeat: sc in next 4 chs, sk next 2 chs, sc in next 4 chs, 3 sc in next ch 2 times, sc in next 4 chs, sk next 2 chs, sc in next 4 chs, 2 sc in last ch(34 sc)
- Swatch rows 2 to 23Ch 1, turn; 2 sc in first st, repeat: sc in next 4 sts, sk next 2 sts, sc in next 4 sts, 3 sc in next st 2 times, sc in next 4 sts, sk next 2 sts, sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in last st(34 sc)
For another width: how many chains to add
For another width, add or take away 11 chains at a time: each 11 chains adds one more repeat of each bracketed group. Measure your own gauge first.
The starting chain calculator opens on this pattern's multiple: type the width you want.
Before you start
- The ch 1 at the start of a row does not count as a stitch.
- Row 1 is the right side.
- Stitches in parentheses, or several of one stitch, are all worked into the one place named after them.
- The number of rows is our estimate: yours may differ, and the length does not change the stitch count.
- Three stitches in one make each peak and two skipped stitches make each valley; the count never changes.
- Leave a tail of about 6 in (15 cm) when you begin, and weave it in at the end with the others.
Instructions
Size: Standard Change sizeUS termsUK terms
- “[ ]” is a repeat.
- The count at the end is what the row leaves.
- Tick a row when it is done. Your place is kept in this browser.
How to read these rows
Square brackets “[ ]” hold a repeat: work what is inside as many times as it says. In UK terms sc is double crochet.
- FoundationCh 123.
- Row 1RS2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, repeat: sc in next 4 chs, sk next 2 chs, sc in next 4 chs, 3 sc in next ch 10 times, sc in next 4 chs, sk next 2 chs, sc in next 4 chs, 2 sc in last chleaves (122 sc)
- Stop and measure when you have worked row 12.Width, across the middle of the rows and not along the chain edge: about 31½ in (80 cm). If it is wider, start again with a smaller hook; if it is narrower, with a larger one. If only the chain edge is tight, make the chain with a larger hook.
- Rows 2 to 150Ch 1, turn; 2 sc in first st, repeat: sc in next 4 sts, sk next 2 sts, sc in next 4 sts, 3 sc in next st 10 times, sc in next 4 sts, sk next 2 sts, sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in last stleaves (122 sc)Repeat until the piece measures about 40 in (102 cm): at our gauge that is row 150. Go by the tape measure, not the count.Next: row 2 of 150
- EndFasten off, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail.
Finishing
- Weave in the ends.
- This pattern has no border: the top and the bottom of this stitch pattern are zigzags, and a straight border would pull the points flat.
In all: 150 rows; 18,300 stitches; 2 ends to weave in.
