Paper for the PDF
Pairs of double crochets leaning apart with a chain between, each V set into the V below. Open, quick and very drapey.
Gauge
13 stitches and 7½ rows to 4 in (10 cm) in V-stitch.
How to measure it
Along a row, count every stitch and every chain between stitches as one.
To count your gauge in the middle of the test piece: four repeats of the bracketed group side by side (12 foundation chains' worth) are about 3.7 in (9.4 cm) wide, and 8 rows are about 4.3 in (10.8 cm) tall.
The pattern also stops you to measure after row 6.
Work a test square first (11 rows)
This piece is small enough to be its own test piece: you may skip the test piece, begin, and measure the width at the first place to stop.
If you do make a swatch, it is a test piece to measure and pull out, not the start of the pattern.
Gauge is counted over 4 in (10 cm), so make the swatch bigger than that: about 6 in (15 cm) each way, and count in the middle of it.
- Swatch foundationCh 22.
- Swatch row 1 (RS)V-st in 5th ch from hook (skipped chs count as dc), repeat: sk next 2 chs, V-st in next ch 5 times, sk next ch, dc in next ch(2 dc, 6 V-sts)
- Swatch rows 2 to 11Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn; repeat: V-st in next ch-1 sp 6 times, sk next st, dc in top of turning ch(2 dc, 6 V-sts)
For another width: how many chains to add
For another width, add or take away 3 chains at a time: each 3 chains adds one more repeat of each bracketed group. Measure your own gauge first.
The starting chain calculator opens on this pattern's multiple and gauge: type the width you want.
Before you start
- The ch 3 at the start of a row counts as a dc. The last stitch of the next row is worked into the top of it.
- Row 1 is the right side.
- A stitch worked into a chain space passes over any stitches that lie before the space; they are left unworked.
- Stitches in parentheses, or several of one stitch, are all worked into the one place named after them.
- The number of rows is our estimate: yours may differ, and the length does not change the stitch count.
- Here a V-stitch is two double crochets with one chain between them, and each V is worked into the chain space of the V below. Some patterns use the name for two double crochets with no chain, worked between the pair below.
- Leave a tail of about 6 in (15 cm) when you begin, and weave it in at the end with the others.

Size: Standard Change sizeUS termsUK terms
- “[ ]” is a repeat.
- The count at the end is what the row leaves.
- Tick a row when it is done. Your place is kept in this browser.
How to read these rows
Square brackets “[ ]” hold a repeat: work what is inside as many times as it says. In UK terms dc is treble.
- FoundationCh 25.
- Row 1RSV-st in 5th ch from hook (skipped chs count as dc), repeat: sk next 2 chs, V-st in next ch 6 times, sk next ch, dc in next chleaves (2 dc, 7 V-sts)
- Stop and measure when you have worked row 6.Width, across the middle of the rows and not along the chain edge: about 7 in (18 cm). If it is wider, start again with a smaller hook; if it is narrower, with a larger one. If only the chain edge is tight, make the chain with a larger hook.
- Rows 2 to 113Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn; repeat: V-st in next ch-1 sp 7 times, sk next st, dc in top of turning chleaves (2 dc, 7 V-sts)Repeat until the piece measures about 60¼ in (153 cm): at our gauge that is row 113. Go by the tape measure, not the count.Next: row 2 of 113
- EndFasten off, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail.
Finishing
- Weave in the ends.
- This pattern has no border, and every size given here is without one.
In all: 113 rows; 2 ends to weave in.
The same stitch as other things
Each is worked in the same stitch pattern, V-stitch, with its own counts and yarn amount.
