Paper for the PDF
Small blocks of three double crochets hang from chain loops and tilt one way and then the other, row by row.
Gauge
13 stitches and 10 rows to 4 in (10 cm) in crazy stitch.
How to measure it
Along a row, count the stitches only, not the chains between them.
To count your gauge in the middle of the test piece: three repeats of the bracketed group side by side (12 foundation chains' worth) are about 3.7 in (9.4 cm) wide, and 10 rows are about 4 in (10 cm) tall.
The pattern also stops you to measure after row 8.
Work a test square first (15 rows)
This piece is small enough to be its own test piece: you may skip the test piece, begin, and measure the width at the first place to stop.
If you do make a swatch, it is a test piece to measure and pull out, not the start of the pattern.
Gauge is counted over 4 in (10 cm), so make the swatch bigger than that: about 6 in (15 cm) each way, and count in the middle of it.
- Swatch foundationCh 20.
- Swatch row 1 (RS)3 dc in 4th ch from hook (skipped chs count as dc), repeat: sk next 3 chs, (sc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch 3 times, sk next 3 chs, sc in next ch(13 dc, 4 sc, 3 ch-3 sps)
- Swatch rows 2 to 15Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn; 3 dc in same st, repeat: (sc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp 3 times, sk next 4 sts, sc in top of turning ch(13 dc, 4 sc, 3 ch-3 sps)
For another width: how many chains to add
For another width, add or take away 4 chains at a time: each 4 chains adds one more repeat of each bracketed group. Measure your own gauge first.
The starting chain calculator opens on this pattern's multiple and gauge: type the width you want.
Before you start
- The ch 3 at the start of a row counts as a dc. The last stitch of the next row is worked into the top of it.
- Row 1 is the right side.
- A stitch worked into a chain space passes over any stitches that lie before the space; they are left unworked.
- Stitches in parentheses, or several of one stitch, are all worked into the one place named after them.
- The number of rows is our estimate: yours may differ, and the length does not change the stitch count.
- Leave a tail of about 6 in (15 cm) when you begin, and weave it in at the end with the others.
Instructions
Size: Standard Change sizeUS termsUK terms
- “[ ]” is a repeat.
- “( )” goes into one place.
- The count at the end is what the row leaves.
- Tick a row when it is done. Your place is kept in this browser.
How to read these rows
Square brackets “[ ]” hold a repeat: work what is inside as many times as it says. Round brackets “( )” inside a line hold stitches that all go into one place. In UK terms sc is double crochet and dc is treble.
- FoundationCh 24.
- Row 1RS3 dc in 4th ch from hook (skipped chs count as dc), repeat: sk next 3 chs, (sc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch 4 times, sk next 3 chs, sc in next chleaves (16 dc, 5 sc, 4 ch-3 sps)
- Stop and measure when you have worked row 8.Width, across the middle of the rows and not along the chain edge: about 6¾ in (17 cm). If it is wider, start again with a smaller hook; if it is narrower, with a larger one. If only the chain edge is tight, make the chain with a larger hook.
- Rows 2 to 150Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn; 3 dc in same st, repeat: (sc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp 4 times, sk next 4 sts, sc in top of turning chleaves (16 dc, 5 sc, 4 ch-3 sps)Repeat until the piece measures about 60 in (152 cm): at our gauge that is row 150. Go by the tape measure, not the count.Next: row 2 of 150
- EndFasten off, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail.
Finishing
- Weave in the ends.
- This pattern has no border, and every size given here is without one.
In all: 150 rows; 3,150 stitches; 2 ends to weave in.
The same stitch as a baby blanket
Each is worked in the same stitch pattern, crazy stitch, with its own counts and yarn amount.
