Go to the instructions

Small shells of two double crochets, a chain and two more, stacked chain space over chain space in straight columns.

The whole baby blanket: 32¼ × 40 in (82 × 102 cm)

Gauge

13 stitches and 7½ rows to 4 in (10 cm) in iris stitch.

How to measure it

Along a row, count the stitches only, not the chains between them.

To count your gauge in the middle of the test piece: three repeats of the bracketed group side by side (12 foundation chains' worth) are about 3.7 in (9.4 cm) wide, and 8 rows are about 4.3 in (10.8 cm) tall.

How to measure your gauge

The pattern also stops you to measure after row 6.

Work a test square first (11 rows)

Work the test piece first. This piece is wide, and starting again after the first place to stop means working its first rows a second time.

A test piece to measure and pull out. It is not the start of the pattern.

Gauge is counted over 4 in (10 cm), so make the swatch bigger than that: about 6 in (15 cm) each way, and count in the middle of it.

  1. Swatch foundationCh 23.
  2. Swatch row 1 (RS)Sh in 5th ch from hook (skipped chs count as dc), repeat: sk next 3 chs, sh in next ch 4 times, sk next ch, dc in next ch(2 dc, 5 sh)
  3. Swatch rows 2 to 11Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn; repeat: sh in next ch-1 sp 5 times, sk next 2 sts, dc in top of turning ch(2 dc, 5 sh)
For another width: how many chains to add

For another width, add or take away 4 chains at a time: each 4 chains adds one more repeat of each bracketed group. Measure your own gauge first.

The starting chain calculator opens on this pattern's multiple and gauge: type the width you want.

Before you start

  • The ch 3 at the start of a row counts as a dc. The last stitch of the next row is worked into the top of it.
  • Row 1 is the right side.
  • A stitch worked into a chain space passes over any stitches that lie before the space; they are left unworked.
  • Stitches in parentheses, or several of one stitch, are all worked into the one place named after them.
  • The number of rows is our estimate: yours may differ, and the length does not change the stitch count.
  • Leave a tail of about 6 in (15 cm) when you begin, and weave it in at the end with the others.

Instructions

Size: Standard Change sizeUS termsUK terms

  • “[ ]” is a repeat.
  • The count at the end is what the row leaves.
  • Tick a row when it is done. Your place is kept in this browser.
How to read these rows

Square brackets “[ ]” hold a repeat: work what is inside as many times as it says. In UK terms dc is treble.

  1. FoundationCh 107.
  2. Row 1RSSh in 5th ch from hook (skipped chs count as dc), repeat: sk next 3 chs, sh in next ch 25 times, sk next ch, dc in next chleaves (2 dc, 26 sh)
  3. Stop and measure when you have worked row 6.Width, across the middle of the rows and not along the chain edge: about 32¼ in (82 cm). If it is wider, start again with a smaller hook; if it is narrower, with a larger one. If only the chain edge is tight, make the chain with a larger hook.
  4. Rows 2 to 75Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn; repeat: sh in next ch-1 sp 26 times, sk next 2 sts, dc in top of turning chleaves (2 dc, 26 sh)Repeat until the piece measures about 40 in (102 cm): at our gauge that is row 75. Go by the tape measure, not the count.
  5. EndFasten off, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail.

Finishing

  • Weave in the ends.
  • This pattern has no border, and every size given here is without one.

In all: 75 rows; 2 ends to weave in.

The same stitch as other things

Each is worked in the same stitch pattern, iris stitch, with its own counts and yarn amount.
