Go to the instructions

Single crochet studded with rounded bumps on one side, like a cobbled street.

The whole throw: 50¼ × 60¼ in (128 × 153 cm)

Gauge

13 stitches and 12 rows to 4 in (10 cm) in aligned cobble stitch.

How to measure it

To count your gauge in the middle of the test piece: 7 repeats of the bracketed group side by side (14 foundation chains' worth) are about 4.3 in (10.9 cm) wide, and 12 rows are about 4 in (10 cm) tall.

How to measure your gauge

The pattern also stops you to measure after row 9.

Work a test square first (19 rows)

Work the test piece first. This piece is wide, and starting again after the first place to stop means working its first rows a second time.

A test piece to measure and pull out. It is not the start of the pattern.

Gauge is counted over 4 in (10 cm), so make the swatch bigger than that: about 6 in (15 cm) each way, and count in the middle of it.

  1. Swatch foundationCh 20.
  2. Swatch row 1 (RS)Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across(19 sc)
  3. Swatch row 2Ch 1, turn; sc in next st, repeat: tr in next st, sc in next st 9 times(10 sc, 9 tr)
  4. Swatch row 3Ch 1, turn; sc in each st across(19 sc)
  5. Swatch rows 4 to 19Repeat swatch rows 2 and 3 in turn: every even-numbered row is worked as swatch row 2, every odd-numbered row as swatch row 3.
For another width: how many chains to add

For another width, add or take away 2 chains at a time: each 2 chains adds one more repeat of each bracketed group, and 2 more stitches to a row that has no brackets. Measure your own gauge first.

The starting chain calculator opens on this pattern's multiple and gauge: type the width you want.

Before you start

  • The ch 1 at the start of a row does not count as a stitch.
  • Row 1 is the right side.
  • The number of rows is our estimate: yours may differ, and the length does not change the stitch count.
  • A treble crochet squeezed between two single crochets cannot stand up, so it folds outward into a bump on the right side.
  • Leave a tail of about 6 in (15 cm) when you begin, and weave it in at the end with the others.

Instructions

Size: Standard Change sizeUS termsUK terms

  • “[ ]” is a repeat.
  • The count at the end is what the row leaves.
  • Tick a row when it is done. Your place is kept in this browser.
How to read these rows

Square brackets “[ ]” hold a repeat: work what is inside as many times as it says. In UK terms sc is double crochet and tr is double treble.

  1. FoundationCh 164.
  2. Row 1RSSc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch acrossleaves (163 sc)
  3. Row 2Ch 1, turn; sc in next st, repeat: tr in next st, sc in next st 81 timesleaves (82 sc, 81 tr)
  4. Row 3Ch 1, turn; sc in each st acrossleaves (163 sc)
  5. Stop and measure when you have worked row 9.Width, across the middle of the rows and not along the chain edge: about 50¼ in (128 cm). If it is wider, start again with a smaller hook; if it is narrower, with a larger one. If only the chain edge is tight, make the chain with a larger hook.
  6. Rows 4 to 181Repeat rows 2 and 3 in turn: every even-numbered row is worked as row 2, every odd-numbered row as row 3.Repeat until the piece measures about 60¼ in (153 cm), ending with a row worked as row 3: at our gauge that is row 181. Go by the tape measure, not the count.
  7. EndFasten off, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail.

Finishing

  • Weave in the ends.
  • This pattern has no border, and every size given here is without one.

In all: 181 rows; 29,503 stitches; 2 ends to weave in.

The same stitch as other things

Each is worked in the same stitch pattern, aligned cobble stitch, with its own counts and yarn amount.
