How it works
- The size to make depends on what the blanket is for and who it is for. Start from the use, not from a number.
- To make a blanket wider or narrower, add or take away whole repeats of the stitch pattern, so that the starting chain is still the pattern's multiple.
- To make a blanket worked in rows longer or shorter, work more rows or fewer. Its starting chain sets the width, and the rows set the length.

Questions
- How big is a baby blanket?
- The charts we read differ more here than anywhere: from 24 by 36 inches (61 by 91 cm) to 42 by 52 inches (107 by 132 cm). A receiving blanket is about 24 to 40 inches (61 to 102 cm) square.
- How many inches wider than the bed should a bedspread be?
- In the charts we read, a bedspread is about 26 to 30 inches (66 to 76 cm) wider than the mattress the same chart gives for it and 12 to 16 inches (30 to 41 cm) longer, so that it hangs over both sides and the foot.
- How do I make a blanket pattern bigger or smaller?
- In a blanket worked in rows, add or take away whole repeats in the starting chain for the width, and rows for the length. Our guide to resizing patterns goes through both, and the starting chain calculator works out the chain for the width you want.
- What is a lapghan?
- A lap blanket: an afghan sized to cover the lap and legs of someone sitting, about 36 by 48 inches (91 by 122 cm).
