Go to the instructions

A tall open row followed by a short firm one, so the fabric has light stripes of texture and steady edges.

The whole scarf: 7 × 60¼ in (18 × 153 cm)

Gauge

13 stitches and 9½ rows to 4 in (10 cm) in single and double crochet rows.

How to measure it

To count your gauge in the middle of the test piece: 13 stitches side by side are about 4 in (10 cm) wide, and 10 rows are about 4.2 in (10.7 cm) tall.

How to measure your gauge

The pattern also stops you to measure after row 8.

Work a test square first (15 rows)

This piece is small enough to be its own test piece: you may skip the test piece, begin, and measure the width at the first place to stop.

If you do make a swatch, it is a test piece to measure and pull out, not the start of the pattern.

Gauge is counted over 4 in (10 cm), so make the swatch bigger than that: about 6 in (15 cm) each way, and count in the middle of it.

  1. Swatch foundationCh 21.
  2. Swatch row 1 (RS)Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across(20 sc)
  3. Swatch row 2Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn; dc in next 19 sts(20 dc)
  4. Swatch row 3Ch 1, turn; sc in next 19 sts, sc in top of turning ch(20 sc)
  5. Swatch rows 4 to 15Repeat swatch rows 2 and 3 in turn: every even-numbered row is worked as swatch row 2, every odd-numbered row as swatch row 3.
For another width: how many chains to add

For another width, chain more or fewer: each chain adds one stitch to every row. Measure your own stitches to 4 in (10 cm) first.

Before you start

  • The ch 3 at the start of a row counts as a dc. The last stitch of the next row is worked into the top of it.
  • The ch 1 at the start of a row does not count as a stitch.
  • Row 1 is the right side.
  • The number of rows is our estimate: yours may differ, and the length does not change the stitch count.
  • Leave a tail of about 6 in (15 cm) when you begin, and weave it in at the end with the others.

  • The count at the end is what the row leaves.
  • Tick a row when it is done. Your place is kept in this browser.
How to read these rows

In UK terms sc is double crochet and dc is treble.

  1. FoundationCh 24.
  2. Row 1RSSc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch acrossleaves (23 sc)
  3. Row 2Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn; dc in next 22 stsleaves (23 dc)
  4. Row 3Ch 1, turn; sc in next 22 sts, sc in top of turning chleaves (23 sc)
  5. Stop and measure when you have worked row 8.Width, across the middle of the rows and not along the chain edge: about 7 in (18 cm). If it is wider, start again with a smaller hook; if it is narrower, with a larger one. If only the chain edge is tight, make the chain with a larger hook.
  6. Rows 4 to 143Repeat rows 2 and 3 in turn: every even-numbered row is worked as row 2, every odd-numbered row as row 3.Repeat until the piece measures about 60¼ in (153 cm), ending with a row worked as row 3: at our gauge that is row 143. Go by the tape measure, not the count.
  7. EndFasten off, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail.

Finishing

  • Weave in the ends.
  • This pattern has no border, and every size given here is without one.

In all: 143 rows; 3,289 stitches; 2 ends to weave in.

The same stitch as other things

Each is worked in the same stitch pattern, single and double crochet rows, with its own counts and yarn amount.
