Paper for the PDF
Single crochet studded with rounded bumps on one side, like a cobbled street.
Gauge
13 stitches and 12 rows to 4 in (10 cm) in aligned cobble stitch.
How to measure it
To count your gauge in the middle of the test piece: 7 repeats of the bracketed group side by side (14 foundation chains' worth) are about 4.3 in (10.9 cm) wide, and 12 rows are about 4 in (10 cm) tall.
The pattern also stops you to measure after row 9.
Work a test square first (19 rows)
This piece is small enough to be its own test piece: you may skip the test piece, begin, and measure the width at the first place to stop.
If you do make a swatch, it is a test piece to measure and pull out, not the start of the pattern.
Gauge is counted over 4 in (10 cm), so make the swatch bigger than that: about 6 in (15 cm) each way, and count in the middle of it.
- Swatch foundationCh 20.
- Swatch row 1 (RS)Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across(19 sc)
- Swatch row 2Ch 1, turn; sc in next st, repeat: tr in next st, sc in next st 9 times(10 sc, 9 tr)
- Swatch row 3Ch 1, turn; sc in each st across(19 sc)
- Swatch rows 4 to 19Repeat swatch rows 2 and 3 in turn: every even-numbered row is worked as swatch row 2, every odd-numbered row as swatch row 3.
For another width: how many chains to add
For another width, add or take away 2 chains at a time: each 2 chains adds one more repeat of each bracketed group, and 2 more stitches to a row that has no brackets. Measure your own gauge first.
The starting chain calculator opens on this pattern's multiple and gauge: type the width you want.
Before you start
- The ch 1 at the start of a row does not count as a stitch.
- Row 1 is the right side.
- The number of rows is our estimate: yours may differ, and the length does not change the stitch count.
- A treble crochet squeezed between two single crochets cannot stand up, so it folds outward into a bump on the right side.
- Leave a tail of about 6 in (15 cm) when you begin, and weave it in at the end with the others.
Instructions
Size: Standard Change sizeUS termsUK terms
- “[ ]” is a repeat.
- The count at the end is what the row leaves.
- Tick a row when it is done. Your place is kept in this browser.
How to read these rows
Square brackets “[ ]” hold a repeat: work what is inside as many times as it says. In UK terms sc is double crochet and tr is double treble.
- FoundationCh 28.
- Row 1RSSc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch acrossleaves (27 sc)
- Row 2Ch 1, turn; sc in next st, repeat: tr in next st, sc in next st 13 timesleaves (14 sc, 13 tr)
- Row 3Ch 1, turn; sc in each st acrossleaves (27 sc)
- Stop and measure when you have worked row 9.Width, across the middle of the rows and not along the chain edge: about 8¼ in (21 cm). If it is wider, start again with a smaller hook; if it is narrower, with a larger one. If only the chain edge is tight, make the chain with a larger hook.
- Rows 4 to 25Repeat rows 2 and 3 in turn: every even-numbered row is worked as row 2, every odd-numbered row as row 3.Repeat until the piece measures about 8¼ in (21 cm), ending with a row worked as row 3: at our gauge that is row 25. Go by the tape measure, not the count.Next: row 4 of 25, worked as row 2
- EndFasten off, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail.
Finishing
- Weave in the ends.
- This pattern has no border, and every size given here is without one.
In all: 25 rows; 675 stitches; 2 ends to weave in.
The same stitch as other things
Each is worked in the same stitch pattern, aligned cobble stitch, with its own counts and yarn amount.
