Go to the instructions

Little fans of a single crochet, a chain and a double crochet, stacked chain space over chain space. Lightly open, with a soft drape.

The whole scarf: 6¾ × 60¼ in (17 × 153 cm)

Gauge

13 stitches and 12½ rows to 4 in (10 cm) in wattle stitch.

How to measure it

Along a row, count every stitch and every chain between stitches as one.

To count your gauge in the middle of the test piece: four repeats of the bracketed group side by side (12 foundation chains' worth) are about 3.7 in (9.4 cm) wide, and 13 rows are about 4.2 in (10.6 cm) tall.

How to measure your gauge

The pattern also stops you to measure after row 10.

Work a test square first (19 rows)

This piece is small enough to be its own test piece: you may skip the test piece, begin, and measure the width at the first place to stop.

If you do make a swatch, it is a test piece to measure and pull out, not the start of the pattern.

Gauge is counted over 4 in (10 cm), so make the swatch bigger than that: about 6 in (15 cm) each way, and count in the middle of it.

  1. Swatch foundationCh 20.
  2. Swatch row 1 (RS)(sc, ch 1, dc) in 3rd ch from hook, repeat: sk next 2 chs, (sc, ch 1, dc) in next ch 5 times, sk next ch, sc in next ch(7 sc, 6 dc, 6 ch-1 sps)
  3. Swatch rows 2 to 19Ch 1, turn; repeat: (sc, ch 1, dc) in next ch-1 sp 6 times, sc in last st(7 sc, 6 dc, 6 ch-1 sps)
For another width: how many chains to add

For another width, add or take away 3 chains at a time: each 3 chains adds one more repeat of each bracketed group. Measure your own gauge first.

The starting chain calculator opens on this pattern's multiple and gauge: type the width you want.

Before you start

  • The ch 1 at the start of a row does not count as a stitch.
  • Row 1 is the right side.
  • A stitch worked into a chain space passes over any stitches that lie before the space; they are left unworked.
  • Stitches in parentheses, or several of one stitch, are all worked into the one place named after them.
  • The number of rows is our estimate: yours may differ, and the length does not change the stitch count.
  • The two chains skipped at the start of row 1 are not worked into; the first of them stays as a small loop at that corner, where every later row has its turning chain.
  • Leave a tail of about 6 in (15 cm) when you begin, and weave it in at the end with the others.

Instructions

Size: Standard Change sizeUS termsUK terms

  • “[ ]” is a repeat.
  • “( )” goes into one place.
  • The count at the end is what the row leaves.
  • Tick a row when it is done. Your place is kept in this browser.
How to read these rows

Square brackets “[ ]” hold a repeat: work what is inside as many times as it says. Round brackets “( )” inside a line hold stitches that all go into one place. In UK terms sc is double crochet and dc is treble.

  1. FoundationCh 23.
  2. Row 1RS(sc, ch 1, dc) in 3rd ch from hook, repeat: sk next 2 chs, (sc, ch 1, dc) in next ch 6 times, sk next ch, sc in next chleaves (8 sc, 7 dc, 7 ch-1 sps)
  3. Stop and measure when you have worked row 10.Width, across the middle of the rows and not along the chain edge: about 6¾ in (17 cm). If it is wider, start again with a smaller hook; if it is narrower, with a larger one. If only the chain edge is tight, make the chain with a larger hook.
  4. Rows 2 to 188Ch 1, turn; repeat: (sc, ch 1, dc) in next ch-1 sp 7 times, sc in last stleaves (8 sc, 7 dc, 7 ch-1 sps)Repeat until the piece measures about 60¼ in (153 cm): at our gauge that is row 188. Go by the tape measure, not the count.
  5. EndFasten off, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail.

Finishing

  • Weave in the ends.
  • This pattern has no border, and every size given here is without one.

In all: 188 rows; 2,820 stitches; 2 ends to weave in.

The same stitch as other things

Each is worked in the same stitch pattern, wattle stitch, with its own counts and yarn amount.
