- A needle and a hook on one row are the same number of millimeters across. That is all the chart says: it does not say they make the same fabric.
- For every numbered needle from US 1 (2.25 mm) to US 15 (10 mm) the number in the hook's US size is the needle's US number: a US 8 needle and an H-8 hook are both 5 mm.
- Every needle size here is numbered the same way by two charts, and every hook by two charts. Sizes the charts number differently are left out.
How it works
- Knitting needles and crochet hooks are both sized by their diameter, so a needle converts to the hook with the same millimeters.
- Go by the millimeters marked on the tool or its package. US letters and numbers vary from maker to maker.
- The same diameter is not the same fabric. For one yarn, the standard chart names larger hooks than needles: for medium (4) yarn, needles of 4.5 to 5.5 mm and hooks of 5.5 to 6.5 mm. So when you take a yarn from a knitting pattern into crochet, start from the hook on the yarn's label, not from the needle.
- Whatever the chart says, the right hook is the one that gives your pattern's gauge. Make a swatch and compare it with the gauge the pattern states.
Worked examples
- What crochet hook is the same size as a US 8 knitting needle?
- H-8. Both are 5 mm.
- What crochet hook matches a 4 mm knitting needle?
- A 4 mm hook, US G-6. A 4 mm needle is US 6.
- What crochet hook is equal to a US 10 1/2 needle?
- K-10 1/2. Both are 6.5 mm.
- What size knitting needle is the same as a J hook?
- A US 10: a J-10 hook and that needle are both 6 mm.
Questions
- Can I use the same size hook as the needle a knitting pattern names?
- It will be the same diameter, and the fabric will not be the same. The standard chart names a larger hook than needle for the same yarn: it gives medium (4) yarn needles of 4.5 to 5.5 mm and hooks of 5.5 to 6.5 mm. Start from the yarn's label and make a swatch.
- What hook is the same as a US 17 or a US 19 knitting needle?
- These two have no row, because the charts we read do not agree on them: US 17 is listed at 12 mm, 12.5 mm and 12.75 mm, and US 19 at 15 mm and 16 mm. Read the millimeters on your own needle and look for a hook of that diameter.
- What about needles smaller than US 1 (2.25 mm)?
- Hooks that thin are steel hooks, the small hooks used for crochet thread. They are numbered the other way round: a higher number is a smaller hook. Go by the millimeters.
- Can I measure a crochet hook with a knitting needle gauge?
- Yes. A needle gauge is a card with a row of sized holes, and the same card is used for hooks: find the hole the shaft of the hook fits and read its millimeters.
