Crochet slipper size chart: foot length by shoe size

Foot length by US shoe size

This is the length of the foot, from the back of the heel to the tip of the longest toe. It is not the length of a finished sole.
Each row is a band of US shoe sizes. The two charts we read give nearly the same lengths for each band, and the row runs from the smallest to the largest figure they give, to the nearest quarter inch.
Centimeters are worked out from the inches and rounded to a whole centimeter.
Shoe sizes for babies and toddlers are not here. The size chart for babies has their foot lengths by age.

Measure the foot if you can. Stand on a ruler or a tape laid flat on the floor, with the back of the heel at zero, and read the mark at the end of the longest toe.
Feet of one shoe size are not all the same length, so a slipper made to a measured foot fits better than one made to a size.
Crochet fabric has some stretch, so a slipper or a sock gives to fit the foot.

How long is the foot for a women's size 8 slipper?: Women's 7 to 9½ is a foot of 9.25 to 10.25 inches (23 to 26 cm).
What is the foot length for a men's size 10?: Men's 9 to 11½ is a foot of 10.25 to 11.25 inches (26 to 29 cm).
How long is a child's size 12 foot?: Children's 10 to 13 is a foot of 6.5 to 7.5 inches (17 to 19 cm).

Are women's and men's shoe sizes the same?: No. For the same foot, the women's size is the larger number: women's 7 to 9½ and men's 6 to 8½ are both a foot of 9.25 to 10.25 inches (23 to 26 cm).
How much shorter than the foot do I make the sole?: This chart gives the length of the foot and no figure for the sole.
