| Stitch | Stitches in round 1 | Add in every round | Published counts for round 1 | In UK terms |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| single crochet | 6 | 6 | 6 to 8 | double crochet (dc) |
| half double crochet | 8 | 8 | 8 to 10 | half treble (htr) |

- The stitch names are United States terms. The last column gives the United Kingdom name of each stitch.
- Published counts for round 1 differ, most of all for half double crochet, where some charts say 8 and some say 10. The second column is the count that the most charts name, and the fourth is the range that two charts or more give.
- The counts are a guide. How tightly you crochet shifts them.
- Rows that fewer than two charts agree on were left out.

- Each count is the count of round 1 times the number of the round.
- If your circle starts with a different count, multiply that count by the number of the round in the same way.
- After round 10 the rule goes on: round 11 has 11 times the count of round 1.

- Two stitches in one stitch is an increase. Each round has one more plain stitch between the increases than the round before.
- Worked exactly like this, the increases stack up and the circle slowly grows corners. To keep it round, start the repeat at a different place in each round, so that the increases do not sit on top of each other.
How it works
- A circle lies flat when every round adds the same number of stitches, and that number is the count of round 1.
- So the stitches in any round are the count of round 1 times the number of the round.
- A taller stitch needs more stitches in round 1 than a shorter one.
- If the circle ruffles at the edge, it has too many stitches: start with fewer, or go down a hook size. If it cups into a bowl, it has too few: start with more.
- Single crochet is double crochet in United Kingdom terms, half double crochet is half treble, and double crochet is treble.

Worked examples
- How many stitches are in round 5 of a single crochet circle?
- 30. The circle starts with 6 stitches, and 5 times 6 is 30.
- How many stitches are in round 10 of a single crochet circle?
- 60: 10 times 6. In that round you work 2 stitches in the next stitch and 1 in each of the next 8 stitches, 6 times.
- How many double crochet are in round 4 of a circle?
- 48, for a circle that starts with 12: 4 times 12.
- How many stitches do I add in each round of half double crochet?
- 8, if you started with 8: round 2 has 16 and round 3 has 24. Whatever count you start with, add that many in every round.
Questions
- My pattern starts with a different number of stitches. Is it wrong?
- No. Most published counts for round 1 run from 6 to 8 for single crochet, 8 to 10 for half double crochet and 10 to 12 for double crochet. The rule holds for any of them: every round adds the count of round 1.
- Why does my circle look like a hexagon?
- Because the increases sit on top of each other, round after round, and each stack turns into a corner. Move the increases so that they do not line up, and the edge stays round.
- Are the counts the same in joined rounds and in a spiral?
- Yes. The count of each round is the same whether you join every round with a slip stitch or work around and around without joining.
- What is a flat circle used for?
- It is how the crown of a top-down hat, a coaster, the base of a basket or bag and a round rug all begin. On a large piece such as a rug, an edge that starts to buckle has too many stitches.
