- These are measurements of the body, not of a finished sweater. Measure the person if you can.
- Each row is one that two published charts give. Where the two differ, the cell runs from the smaller figure to the larger. Centimeters are worked out from the inches.
- The children's rows are size numbers (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16), as both charts name them. Neither chart gives an age for a size.
- The women's rows are named by the bust alone. The two charts give different letters to the same bust: a bust of 36 to 38 inches (91 to 97 cm) is a Medium on one chart and runs from Medium into Large on the other.
- The men's rows are letters that both charts give to the same chest. One chart writes XXL and XXXL where the other writes 2X and 3X.
- Sizes and measures that only one chart gives are left out. There is no row for a baby: one chart sizes babies by age and the other by a size number.
How it works
- A chart gives typical figures, and few people match a row in every place. Go by the person's own measurements where you have them.
- Chest or bust: measure all the way around the fullest part. Hold the tape snug, not tight.
- Waist: measure around the natural waistline.
- Hips: measure around the fullest part of the hips.
- A pattern's finished measurement is the body plus or minus ease. With positive ease the piece is larger than the body. With negative ease it is smaller, and stretches to fit.
- Between two sizes, choose the smaller for a closer fit and the larger for a looser one.
Worked examples
- What chest measurement is a child's size 6?
- 25 inches (64 cm) on both charts, with a waist of 22 to 22.5 inches (56 to 57 cm).
- What are the waist and hips for a 36 to 38 inch bust?
- A waist of 28 to 31 inches (71 to 79 cm) and hips of 38 to 40 inches (97 to 102 cm).
- What chest measurement is a men's Large?
- 42 to 44 inches (107 to 112 cm), with a waist of 36 to 39 inches (91 to 99 cm).
Questions
- Is this the size my finished sweater should be?
- No. These are body measurements. A pattern lists either the finished measurement of each size or the body each size is meant to fit, so check which. For a loose fit the finished chest is larger than the body, and for a close fit it is the same or smaller.
- Is a Medium the same size in every pattern?
- No. The two charts here give different letters to the same bust. Choose a size by the measurements a pattern prints, not by the letter.
- How do I measure a dog for a crochet sweater?
- Dog sweater patterns are sized by the chest. Measure around the widest part of the dog's chest, just behind the front legs. This chart has no sizes for dogs.
- Where are the sizes for babies?
- The size chart for babies has head and foot sizes by age. This chart has no chest for a baby, because the two charts do not size babies the same way. Our suggestion
- Where are the sizes for hats, slippers, scarves and blankets?
- Each has a chart of its own on this site: the hat size chart, the slipper size chart, the scarf size chart, the headband size chart and the blanket size chart. Our suggestion
