  • The first column is in US terms, with the UK name of each stitch that has another one. Each other column is that language's word for the same stitch or the same pattern word.
  • Every word here is given for that term by the tables of two publishers. Where no two of them share a word, the cell says so and nothing is guessed: 13 of the 78 cells have no word.
  • Where the tables give a language more than one name for a stitch, the cell has the names that two of them share.
  • Russian is printed in its own letters, as a Russian pattern prints it.
  • Languages for which we found a single table are left out.

How it works

  • The stitches are the same in every language, and only their names change. Find the word your pattern uses in its language's column, then read the US term in the first column.
  • A chart needs no translation. Its symbols stand for stitches, not for words, so a chart reads the same whatever language the pattern is written in. If your pattern has a chart, the chart of symbols may be all you need.
  • The first column is in US terms. A UK pattern uses the same English words for different stitches: a US single crochet is a UK double crochet, and a US double crochet is a UK treble.

Worked examples

What is столбик без накида in English?

Questions

Is a Dutch stokje a US or a UK double crochet?
A US double crochet, which is a UK treble. The Dutch vaste is a US single crochet, which is a UK double crochet.
Why do some cells have no word?
Because the tables we read give different words for that term in that language, or only one of them gives a word. A word is printed here only when two publishers give the same one.
My pattern is in a language that is not here. What can I do?
Look for a chart in the pattern. A chart shows each stitch as a symbol, so it can be followed without reading the words around it.
