A blank coat of arms has a plain shield with a five-point crown resting on its top edge, a laurel branch curving up each side from a crossing under the point, and an empty ribbon below with a tail folded behind each end. The shield, crown, ribbon and stems are stem stitch, the line inside the shield is back stitch, the laurel leaves are fishbone stitch, the lines inside the ribbon are running stitch, the two small folds are satin stitch and the pearls and jewels on the crown are French knots.
Size and details
Easy. Line stitches, fishbone stitch and French knots, with a little satin stitch.
3 colors of floss and 6 kinds of stitch:
| Hoop | Inches | Centimeters | Satin stitch up to |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 in (8 cm) | 1.5 × 1.6 in | 3.8 × 4.1 cm | 1/16 in (1.6 mm) |
| 4 in (10 cm) | 2.3 × 2.5 in | 5.8 × 6.4 cm | 1/16 in (1.6 mm) |
| 5 in (13 cm) | 3.1 × 3.3 in | 7.9 × 8.4 cm | 1/16 in (1.6 mm) |

| 8 in (20 cm) | 5.4 × 5.8 in | 13.7 × 14.7 cm | 1/8 in (3 mm) |
- In a 3 or 4 inch hoop the French knots are drawn smaller than about 2 mm (a little over 1/16 in). Use one strand of floss for them there, or choose a larger hoop.
The pattern is drawn inside a circle about half an inch (1.3 cm) smaller all around than the hoop.
