A poinsettia sits at the foot of a tall oval frame: two leafy branches rise from it, bow outward and draw together toward the top, leaving a gap between their tips. The frame holds a name, a date or a few words. The poinsettia has seven pointed red bracts (the red leaves that look like petals) in fishbone stitch, smaller rose-pink bracts in satin stitch, and at its middle a cluster of green satin stitch buds, each tipped with a gold French knot. The branches are stem stitch and the leaves are satin stitch, each half slanted to the center vein in a dark and a light green.

- In a 3 or 4 inch hoop the French knots are drawn smaller than about 2 mm (a little over 1/16 in). Use one strand of floss for them there, or choose a larger hoop.
The pattern is drawn inside a circle about half an inch (1.3 cm) smaller all around than the hoop.
