The drake has a dark green head, a golden yellow bill, a narrow white collar and a chestnut breast, a pale gray body, a dark rump and a short white tail. The near wing is mid gray and carries the blue wing patch with a white line on each side; the far wing rises beside it in paler gray. Bill, neck and back lie on one level line and no feet show.
